What are organic black beans?
Organic black beans are dried beans with a distinct, earthy flavor. They are similar to brown beans in preparation, but are slightly smaller and have a deep black color. Their texture is firm and almost meaty, with a mild flavor reminiscent of mushrooms, making them particularly suitable as a meat substitute in vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Unlike canned beans, they contain no salt or preservatives. You prepare them exactly as you like.
What do you use them for?
Black beans are popular in Latin American dishes, chilis, and hearty salads. But they also work excellently in a traditional Dutch 'stamppot' or a stew. They absorb herbs and spices well, which makes them versatile in both simple and more elaborate recipes.
Why organic? Grown without pesticides, richer in flavor, and better for the soil. That's why we only offer organic products.
Preparation
For black beans from a new harvest, soaking is usually not necessary. If the beans are a bit older, it is advisable to soak them beforehand. Ideally, start the preparation the evening before cooking.
- Rinse the beans well with cold water
- Put them in a large pan and add three times the amount of water
- Let them soak for at least twelve hours at room temperature
- Drain the soaking water and use fresh water for cooking
- Cook the beans until tender in forty-five to sixty minutes
Tip: Cooked black beans can be perfectly frozen in portions.
Storage
Dried black beans have a long shelf life. Store them in a tightly sealed jar or bag in a cool, dry, and dark place. This way, they will stay good for up to two years. After this time, the skins may become a bit harder. The beans will still be fine to use, but will require a longer soaking and cooking time.
