What are organic red lentils?
Red lentils belong to the legume family and are the quickest cooking of all lentil types. They are decorticated and split, meaning they have no skin and quickly absorb water during cooking. Raw, they are reddish-orange in color, but they turn yellow when cooked. The taste is mild, slightly sweet, and nutty.
Because they have no skin, they are also easier to digest than other legumes. This makes them suitable for people with sensitive stomachs, as well as for children.
Unlike canned lentils, they contain no salt or preservatives. You prepare them exactly as you wish.
Why organic? Grown without pesticides, richer in flavor, and better for the soil. That's why we only offer organic products.
What do you use them for?
Red lentils are incredibly versatile. They become creamy in texture when cooked, making them perfect for soups, dahl, curries, and sauces. But they also work well in heartier dishes like lentil pasta sauce, casseroles, or as a base for lentil burgers.
Because they cook quickly and don't require any pre-preparation, they are ideal for weekday meals. A nutritious meal in less than twenty minutes.
Preparation
Red lentils do not need to be soaked. Rinsing is sufficient.
- Rinse the lentils thoroughly under cold water
- Place them in a pan with twice the amount of water
- Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low
- Cook the lentils for fifteen to twenty minutes until tender
- Only add salt at the end
Tip: Are you cooking them for soup or dahl? Then add them directly to your broth or coconut milk and let them cook until they naturally fall apart.
Storage
Store dried red lentils in a tightly sealed jar or bag in a cool, dry, and dark place. They will keep for up to a year. Avoid moisture, light, and heat to maintain their quality.
