Order split peas

We specially select the best quality split peas, carefully harvested and shelled. This causes the peas to split into two halves, creating the characteristic split peas. If you order before 4 PM, you will receive them the day after tomorrow.

What are split peas?

Split peas come from dried green peas, a legume from the butterfly flower family. During processing, the outer skin and germ are removed, causing the pea to split into two equal halves. Hence the name "split peas".

Split peas have a mild, slightly sweet taste and become wonderfully soft after cooking. They are ideal for making traditional pea soup or hearty purees.

Preparation

Split peas generally do not need to be soaked, but if you do, they will cook faster. Unsoaked split peas need about twice as much cooking time. If you do want to soak the peas, follow the steps below:

  1. Rinse the peas thoroughly with cold water.

  2. Place them in a pan with plenty of cold water (about one and a half to two liters per kilo of peas).

  3. Let the peas soak for about twelve hours.

  4. Drain them and then process them in your dish.

After cooking, split peas have an earthy taste and turn into a firm puree. For the tastiest homemade pea soup, you can combine one bag of split peas with one bag of whole peas.

Storage

Dried split peas have a long shelf life. Store them in a well-sealed jar or bag in a cool, dry, and dark place. This way they will keep for up to a year and retain their quality and taste.
