What are brown beans
Brown beans grow on a leguminous plant and are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant-based proteins. Thanks to their high protein content and slow carbohydrates, they are an excellent meat substitute and very popular in vegetarian dishes.
The beans have a full, savory flavor and are versatile. From classic dishes like chili con carne to fresh bean salads with chickpeas, kidney beans, and white beans.
Preparation method
Preparing brown beans requires some preparation:
-
Rinse the beans thoroughly.
-
Soak them in cold water for at least 12 hours (about three times as much water as beans).
-
Use the soaking water as cooking water for extra flavor.
-
Cook the beans for approximately 60 minutes until tender.
With a new harvest of brown beans, soaking may not always be necessary.
Storage
Dried brown beans have a long shelf life. Store them in a cool, dry, and dark place, and they will keep for up to a year. After this period, the skin may become a bit harder, but the beans remain perfectly edible; they will just need some extra soaking and cooking time.
